Dioxins Make The Foods We Eat Toxic & Cause Severe Reproductive Problems

How many of you have heard of Dioxins or Furans? Did you know that these chemicals are among some of the most toxic chemicals known to science? Did you know that there are in the foods you eat? Did you also know that these chemicals cause cancer (an increased risk of breast cancer in women), and they also cause severe reproductive and developmental problems!

We are exposed to these toxic chemicals by way of the food chain, as Dioxins simply climb their way up the food chain! "A North American eating a typical North American diet will receive 93% of their dioxin exposure from meat and dairy products (23% is from milk and dairy alone; the other large sources of exposure are beef, fish, pork, poultry and eggs)"

"Men have no ways to get rid of dioxin other than letting it break down according to its chemical half-lives. Women, on the other hand, have two ways which it can exit their bodies:

* It crosses the placenta... into the growing infant;
* It is present in the fatty breast milk, which is also a route of exposure which doses the infant, making breast-feeding for non-vegan/vegetarian mothers quite hazardous."

"f you're eating the typical North American diet, this is where you are getting your dioxin from: Beef, Dairy, Chicken, Pork, Fish and Eggs"

Here is the EPA's FULL Report on Dioxins

To say the least these finds are disturbing.

DH and I stumbled onto this information last night after I told him about what Wannabe Mom had written about sex during menstration (as she was told by her May.an Massage Practitioner)....that it can cause endometriosis. He didn't believe it, so we did some research. Well we stumbled upon the Dioxin report, and I'm glad that we did. I remember reading about dioxins in a book about vegetarian/veganism years ago, before I went full vegan the first time. Then I sort of just forgot about them. Now I remember part of why I went vegan in the first place! I am going vegan again immediately.

Though I'm not ready to go completely vegan, I'd like to move a little more in that direction. One of the main problems I've had is coping with the restrictions that make it so much harder to eat out or have dinner at a friend's house. Any suggestions?

Niobe - you can always take small steps - distinguish between home & out - be vegan in your home but eat dairy while out if no other options are available. Josh tries to do that but I just can't give up milk & eggs. Substitutes make me ill. Soy especially I find more problematic ecologically than local milk.

Erin, I've been thinking a lot about your decisions re: care in a subsequent pregnancy. Are you going to have the option of having pre-conception appointments with different obs? To find someone supportive of your desire for a VBAC? Although we waited until after conception to look around for another doctor, I feel incredibly grateful that I was able to search around. Since we then managed to find a practice experienced with high-risk women and yet still respectful of our intelligence and desires. Those doctors are out there and it's amazing to be treated by one. Plus we have an incredible birthing center attached to the hospital (literally on the same floor as the OR & NICU separated only by a sound proof door.) I've heard it's a great place to give birth from many moms, & that they are very respectful of women's desires to use pain medication or not. Is the large hospital you describe capable of that? Since I'm only high-risk until I make it to 36 weeks, and then back in the "normal" category for birth, I don't know the particular challenges you're going to face. But I can relate to how the next months are going to bring so many new challenges into your life. I so hope they bring joy as well, and that you'll find the support you need.

Hey Erin,
I was actually going to get in touch with you soon because I thought you might be the best person to ask about a healthy diet for Toddlers. I'm pretty positive that you probably looked into that sort of thing (making your own baby food etc). I'd love to chat with you about it, if you think it would be okay :)

As for me...I'm starting to really want to get educated about this whole Dairy, meat thing. Does organic milk contain all of that horrible toxic stuff? I feel pretty dumb and ignorant for not worrying about it until now. And I'll admit that I was a little frustrated by your "breast feeding moms, potentially hazardous" comment...but I guess the truth hurts sometimes. Thanks :)
Love ya,
Meagan

hi birdie's mama,
i don't know if i completely believe the whole sex during menstruation thing my practitioner told me, and i haven't done research on it so please let me know if you find anything. i was incredulous of some of the things she told me but it's not like she was telling me to step in front of a bus.
hugs for all your info and i'm thinking of you three, always.

Women have been having sex for thousands of years during their periods. I really think dioxins are most responsible for endometriosis. The Endometriosis Association had info about a study done at some universty (don't remember where) on rhesus monkeys. The researchers exposed the monkeys to high levels of dioxin intending to stimulate cancer growth. They didn't. What they found was that most of the female monkeys developed endo, and many died from endo implants in their brains, lungs, etc. Now, don't even get me started on the whole monkeys as research tools thing, because it makes me sick. But the bottom line is that a bunch of healthy female monkeys developed life-threatning forms of endo after being exposed to dioxins.
